What are Free Radicals?
19th May 2018
Free radicals are buzz words used frequently when pollution and environmental stressors are analysed. Good news is the Korean skin care focuses on the nowadays skin issues and stressors. Therefore, it provides the most successful weapon in a fight with free radicals, antioxidants.
What are free radicals?
Free radicals are highly unstable molecules. They can be created by stress, sun or pollution, including smog, dust and cigarette smoke. As these unstable molecules look to pair with a missing electron they release extra energy that can damage neighbouring skin cells and collagen.
Impact of free radicals on the skin
Free radicals are one of the most common causes of visible signs of skin ageing, including sagging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. Their power is so strong that they can damage DNA. Free radicals penetrate the skin, attack the structure of the skin, ie. lipids and weaken the skin’s barrier. As a result of this process, skin age prematurely as it becomes dry and loses its elasticity. Free radicals can cause also acne.
Antioxidants- a weapon against free radicals
Antioxidants are compounds that can donate an electron to a free radical. As a result, the free radical doesn’t have to take the electron from the skin’s atoms.
These crucial for your health antioxidants occur naturally in the body. However, in situations where the concentration of free radicals is increased, your body may need some extra help. Good news is all extra antioxidants can be delivered in a form of skincare products and diet.
You can consume antioxidants in certain foods such as fruits, vegetables and certain teas. Some great and delicious antioxidant-rich fruits include blueberries, blackberries and cranberries, whilst beans, artichokes and russet potatoes are great vegetable alternatives.
Antioxidants can neutralize the negative impact of free radicals on your skin and its health. It is important to use them with a broad-spectrum sunscreen to help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
