Skinsider: What inspired you to launch Hamel?

Hamel: People often try to mask or compensate for their shortcomings externally, a tendency that is especially prominent during adolescence. When I was a student, I struggled with cystic acne, which severely impacted my self-esteem. Determined to find a solution, I experimented with countless cosmetics tailored to my oily skin and immersed myself in learning how to use each product effectively. Through this journey, my interest and understanding of cosmetics naturally deepened.

This personal experience ignited my passion for chemical ingredients, leading me to pursue a degree in a related field. Yet, like many, I found myself uncertain about my next steps. Despite the confusion, one desire remained clear: I wanted to create cosmetics, which had become my greatest passion.

During a period of reflection at my parents’ house, I observed my older sister, a working mom balancing her career and childcare. Her busy schedule meant she had little time for elaborate skincare routines, often relying on a simple mist. This experience struck a chord with me. I thought, “Soon, I might face a similar reality—juggling work and personal life, losing myself in the daily grind.”

This common struggle is prevalent in our society, but it’s crucial for people not to forget to invest in and love themselves amidst their busy lives. Inspired by this realization, I founded the brand Hamel. My mission is to remind customers to prioritize self-care and cherish themselves, even in the midst of their hectic routines.

Hamel: First, we strive to incorporate the latest trends from Korea. Cosmetic ingredients evolve rapidly, so I ensure that our products include trendy ingredients, allowing overseas customers to experience these innovations.

Secondly, I focus on creating products that I personally enjoy and want to use. Simply following trends can sometimes compromise product quality. Therefore, I conduct numerous tests to ensure that each product delivers real, noticeable effects before it is released.

With these two main principles in mind, I develop prototypes that are nearly complete. After testing them with my employees and acquaintances, I make improvements and then release the final products.
