What is a Double-Cleanse?

30th Aug 2017

The double cleansing method originated in Korea is nowadays recommended by aestheticians and dermatologist to form part of an evening skincare regimen.

It is an essential step and its main purpose is to help achieve healthy and radiant skin. If you wear makeup, sunscreen or have spent time outdoors, you will benefit from it.

As the name indicates the double cleanse consists of two steps. The skin cleansing process starts with an oil cleanser followed by a foam or gel cleanser. The two formulas will guarantee your skin will be squeaky clean.

The oil-based cleanser is used to remove all oil-based impurities: sebum, sunscreen and makeup. Furthermore, it will remove deposits from air pollution and free radicals which contribute to skin ageing and destroy elastin and collagen in your skin.

A water-based cleanser is used to remove water-based impurities, including sweat and dirt.

If skin isn’t properly cleansed from makeup, sunscreen and other impurities this can cause many skincare problems, including excessive dryness, sebum overproduction, enlarged pores or acne, blackheads, whiteheads and inflammation.

As a result, double cleanse can be used for every skin type and skin concern. Even oily and sensitive skin can benefit from it. Oily and acne prone skin should use an oil-based cleanser as it will gently remove makeup, impurities and excess sebum without irritating and drying out the skin.

Remember you can fight oil with oil! Oil will attract oil and leave your skin clean without drying out.

Step One

Oil cleanser: Cleansing oils, such as Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil, will not sink into the pores. Instead, these will attract impurities and melt all of them. After adding a small amount of water, you will wash it away without leaving your skin dry and stripped of essential moisture.

How to use: In your evening routine, apply a pump of the oil cleanser on a dry face and massage it onto your face in gentle, upward circular motions. Then add lukewarm water to your face and massage your face until the cleanser emulsifies and turns into a milky texture. Rinse it off.

Second Step

Water-based cleansers, such as Klairs Rich Moist Foaming Cleanser, or one of the amazing Dr. G cleansers will tackle any remaining impurities.

Foam/ cream/ gel cleanser: Applied after oil cleanser, a water-based cleanser will gently draw out water-based impurities such as sweat and dirt.

How to use: Use in the morning and evening. Apply it after the oil cleanser. Massage with gentle upward circular motions. Rinse off with lukewarm water and follow with a toner.

This cleansing routine will allow you to keep your skin squeaky clean. With time it will reduce your enlarged pores, eliminate breakouts and acne without stripping your skin from its natural barrier.
