Do You Need a Richer Moisturiser for Autumn and Winter? When More Skincare Feels Like Too Much

Do You Need a Richer Moisturiser for Autumn and Winter? When More Skincare Feels Like Too Much

Posted by Skinsider Team on 9th Oct 2026

As the weather cools and the central heating goes on, your usual moisturiser may feel less comforting. But before adding a richer cream, hydrating serum and overnight mask, consider what your skin actually needs.

A seasonal switch can be helpful- it does not have to mean more steps.

Why your skin may feel drier in colder weather?

Cold air and indoor heating can make it harder for skin to retain moisture, leaving it feeling tight, rough or flaky. However, if your current moisturiser keeps your skin comfortable throughout the day, there is no need to change it simply because autumn has arrived.

Richer does not always mean more hydrating

A thick cream can feel reassuring on a cold evening, but texture alone does not tell you how well a product will moisturise your skin.

Moisturisers often combine ingredients that perform different roles:

  • Humectants, such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, help attract and hold water.
  • Emollients, such as squalane, help soften the skin.
  • Occlusive ingredients help reduce moisture loss.

A lightweight formula can provide useful hydration, while a richer cream may offer more comfort when skin feels dry. Choosing between them is about the overall formula and how it feels on your skin, rather than how thick it looks in the jar.

Remember: dry skin lacks oil, while dehydrated skin lacks water. Even oily skin can become dehydrated, so it may need more hydration without necessarily needing a heavier cream.

Can your skincare routine be too hydrating?

For everyday skincare, it is more useful to ask whether your routine feels too heavy than whether your skin is receiving “too much hydration”.

A hydrating toner, essence, serum, moisturiser and sleeping mask may each have a place in a routine. You do not necessarily need all of them at once, though, especially if several steps serve a similar purpose.

You might want to simplify if:

  • Your skin stays sticky or greasy long after application.
  • Products leave a noticeable film that feels uncomfortable.
  • Your skincare rolls or pills when you apply make-up.
  • You keep adding layers without noticing better skin comfort.

When should you switch to a richer moisturiser?

A richer cream may be worth trying if your skin develops dry patches or feels tight again soon after moisturising. Review your cleansing and exfoliation habits too: very hot water and harsh products can contribute to dryness.

You could keep a lighter moisturiser for mornings and use a richer formula at night. For combination skin, apply more to dry areas and less where your skin already feels comfortable.

Choose the right step for your autumn routine

Extra hydration does not always have to come from a richer cream. A toner, serum or moisturiser can each have a place — choose the step that adds something useful to your existing routine.

A milky toner for a light layer of hydration

If your moisturiser still feels comfortable but you would like an extra hydrating step after cleansing, discover TIRTIR Milk Skin Toner Light. With niacinamide, rice bran extract and panthenol, it offers a lightweight option without the feel of a rich cream.

Try it as your hydrating step before deciding whether you also need a serum.

A serum when you want to keep your favourite cream

If your moisturiser still feels comfortable but your skin needs extra hydration, discover Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Serum. Birch sap, hyaluronic acid, glycerin and beta-glucan help maintain moisture and leave skin feeling soft, with an easily absorbed texture.

Use it as your chosen hydrating step rather than automatically layering it with another serum.

A moisturiser for dryness and lasting comfort

If your skin feels dry or tight again soon after moisturising, reconsidering your cream may be more useful than adding several watery layers.

PURITO Mighty Bamboo Panthenol Cream combines 10% panthenol with squalane, niacinamide and bamboo extract to help replenish moisture, soften the skin and support the skin barrier.

You do not need all three. Start with the step that best addresses what your current routine is missing.

Change one step before adding several more

Before upgrading your entire routine, try one adjustment: change your moisturiser, reduce exfoliation or choose a gentler cleanser. Keep other steps familiar so you can assess whether the change helps.

A toner or serum can stay if it adds comfort, but you do not need every hydrating format in one routine. Let your skin’s needs guide your autumn and winter choices.
