Korean SPF Guide: How Much, How Often, and When to Reapply

In the world of skincare, SPF is non-negotiable. It protects the skin from sun damage, premature ageing, and pigmentation. But how do you apply it properly, how much do you really need, and when should you reapply it? Let’s break down the essentials and bust some common SPF myths while we’re at it.

How to Apply SPF Correctly

The two-finger rule is a great way to measure the right amount of sunscreen for your face and neck. Simply apply SPF along the length of your index and middle finger. For the whole body, you need about 30ml.

One application a day isn’t enough. You should reapply SPF every two hours, especially if you’re outdoors, sweating, or touching your face. For easy reapplication during the day, especially over makeup, sun sticks are a game-changer.

SPF should be the final step in your morning skincare routine, applied to clean, moisturised skin at least 15 minutes before makeup. This gives it enough time to form a proper protective barrier.

What to Avoid and Watch Out For

Don’t mix SPF with your moisturiser, it can dilute the formula and compromise protection. Layering is better: apply moisturiser first, then sunscreen.

Apply SPF not only to your face but also to often-forgotten areas like ears, lips, neck, eyelids, and even along the hairline. These spots are equally exposed to UV rays and deserve protection too.

If your eyes get watery after using SPF, it could be because the formula is too irritating or evaporating into your eyes. In that case, switch to a gentler formula, ideally with mineral filters.

When using cushions or tinted bases with SPF, remember they don’t provide enough coverage on their own. Also, applying SPF after makeup can alter the shade—so it's a good idea to apply a thin layer of SPF before makeup, especially before using a cushion.

And yes—people with darker skin tones still need SPF. UV damage can affect all skin types and tones.
