What is maskne?
Maskne (a portmanteau of mask+acne) is a term used to describe any skin issues which arise from wearing a face mask. This is simply a case of dry skin for most people, but there are other signs to be aware of.
What are the signs of maskne?
Maskne can result in acne, redness (especially on the cheeks) and areas of sensitivity. Some people also experience contact dermatitis if their skin takes a bad reaction to the mask’s material or any sprays applied to the mask to make it safe to use.
How can K-Beauty products help with maskne?
A big part of any K-Beauty routine is prevention and protection. When you get skin in a state where it’s healthy and strong, the chances of your pores giving you maskne problems is greatly reduced.

Maskne is really drying out the pores on my nose. What can I do?
Blackheads are typically the first thing you’ll notice if you’re experiencing maskne. Having a mask rest on the nose for long periods, combined with moisture and heat, is something your pores will love to react to. Rather annoyingly, that means they want to enlarge and trap oil. To help keep blackheads and pores in check, use an exfoliator as part of your nightly skincare routine.
It is best to opt for gentler exfoliators as going too hard can result in redness and leaving the skin prone to a breakout. JKosmmune Cleansing Powder is great for this. Match that with a product like By Wishtrend Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water, which works harder but should only be used once or twice a week.
Can wearing a mask too much make maskne worse?
Yes. Like sitting down at a computer to work all day or driving for long periods, you need to give your body (in this case, the skin) a break. It helps if you have the chance to take your mask off for 10-15 minutes every few hours to let your skin breathe.
Also, if you’re wearing a fabric mask (as opposed to disposable), make sure you wash it frequently, especially if you’re buying a new one. Some masks will be pre-treated and can make the skin itchy the first time they’re worn right out of the packaging.
I already have dry skin. What can I do to prevent maskne from getting worse?
Wearing a mask can leave naturally dry skin in a worse position at the end of the day. To help combat this, it is ideal if you apply a moisturiser before wearing a mask. And if you’re out and about all day wearing a mask, having moisturiser handy is a great idea.
